Landscapes

VinesLying between the first foothills of the Larzac plateau and the Mediterranean Sea, the Hérault Valley is a region of starkly contrasting landscapes. The Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge) marks the separation between the plain and the garrigue: to the south of this unique structure a lush green plain unfolds, with the characteristic features of a wine-growing area. To the north, visitors will discover a landscape of low, gently sloping limestone hills: the garrigues, here a marked change of scenery characterised by the presence of the Hérault Gorges.

The Hérault Valley is located in the so-called "olive zone", a term used by biologists, climatologists and historians to define the limits of the Mediterranean region. All its characteristics are clearly represented here: the climate, vegetation, fauna, flora, the nature of the watercourses and the crops man has chosen to cultivate.

It is from this combination of elements that the rich and varied landscapes of the Hérault Valley have developed.
