The caves

Inside of the cave - credit Grotte de ClamouseThe various characteristics that led to the carving out of the Hérault Gorges were also a decisive factor in the formation of numerous subterranean caves in this same area. Today tens of kilometres of cave networks, created by water running through cracks in the rock and dissolving the limestone, have been identified and recorded. La Clamouse a witness to the passing of the years, is their crowning glory.

The formation and hollowing out of the Hérault Gorges and the caves in the area are inextricably linked, and the same holds true of their exploration today. The Hérault Valley is the scene of some exceptional geological phenomena just waiting to be discovered, so the opportunity to explore some of the jewels in its crown is one not to be missed.
