Vines and olive trees
Vines are grown throughout the area, tying it together, from north to south and from east to west. They carpet the valley bottom, run over the hills and roam over the limestone plateaus.Their leaves change with the season, from soft, downy green in the spring, to bright and then dark green in the summer, to finish in shades of red and yellow before they finally fall. Once stripped of their fruit and leaves, the stocks lie brown and seemingly at a loss, but the wine maturing in the storehouses will produce some of the greatest vintages of the Languedoc wine-growing region.
This is the time of year when the focus of agricultural activity shifts to another part of the region, and suddenly it's the olive trees that are in the spotlight. A symbol of Mediterranean civilisation in both summer and winter, the olive tree adds a glimmer of silver to our landscapes. |
