Circulades

Circulades du PougetLe Pouget, Puéchabon, Saint-Jean-de-Fos and Saint-Pargoire are villages built on a circular plan and known as "circulades".

According to Krzysztof PAWLOWSKI , they bear witness to the existence of a medieval form of urban planning in which the circle was the basis of all or part of the system of apportioning land.

This Polish researcher describes the “circulade” as a succession of “rings laid out around a central nucleus in the form of strips of adjoining houses.” This original type of urban planning is thought to go back to the year 1000 and to have had its origins in the symbolic value attached to the circle in Christian belief. It could be linked with defensive requirements and also with systems of measurement based on the circle.
