The Pilgrimage Route
"From the year 1000 onwards, pilgrims coming from the eastern empire and from Italy would meet in Arles to take the French Mediterranean pilgrim’s way or Via Tolosana. It is the same route, give or take a few hundred metres, as the GR 673 long-distance footpath takes today. After stops in Saint-Gilles du Gard and Montpellier, the pilgrims would cross the Hérault Valley. They made their way through garrigue and olive groves to Montarnaud and La Boissière to reach the abbeys of Aniane and Gellone, joined by the Devil’s Bridge, in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert.
