Dolmens and menhirs

Dolmen of Le Pouget - credit Imago ad graphicumAbout 5,000 years ago, the first ‘peasants’ settled in the garrigues. Their tombs, known as dolmens can now be seen dotted all over the landscape together with a large number of menhirs (standing stones), the significance of which is still uncertain. The Pouget dolmen is surely one of the most remarkable prehistoric monuments in the region. It is built on a natural mound and follows tradition in being constructed on the pattern of a passageway followed by an anti-chamber and then a burial-chamber. Its unusual features are its walls, of a stacked stone construction, and its large size.

The menhirs on the Lavagnes plateau: from ancient times, this area was an important crossroads, summer pasture and well-used religious site. There are still some menhirs to be seen there today.
