The caves
La Clamouse
Discovered in 1945 a few hundred yards away from the Pont du Diable by potholers from the potholing club in Montpellier, the rarity, delicacy and abundance of its concretions make this cave quite unique. One of the most beautiful subterranean sites known, this network of caves and galleries remained hidden for thousands of years, and it was only after the drought of the summer of 1945 when the entrance sump was drained that it was able to be explored. This was a perilous, testing and disheartening experience, but well worth the effort.
After over a month of relentless hard work in the labyrinth of dangerous jagged galleries, the explorers eventually found themselves faced with a unique spectacle, dazzled by vast rooms of luminous brightness, adorned with drapery-like concretions, excrescences, passageways and calcite or aragonite needle-shaped crystals.
Since this discovery, two further entrances have been created to make it easier for tourists to explore the caves; the tour is based on a 900 m route starting from the lower galleries known as the "Labyrinth", and moving up to the oldest upper levels. A real journey through time and a unique experience, a visit to the cave of La Clamouse brings together all the most marvellous things to be explored in the world beneath our feet.
