The Legend of the Devil's Bridge
The building of this bridge, such a bold enterprise at the time, must have had a powerful effect on the popular imagination. Indeed, according to the legend, it took nothing less than an agreement between Guilhem and Satan for it to be built.
Instead of the promised soul that the Devil had demanded, Guilhem sent a poor dog to cross the bridge, with an old cooking-pot fastened to its tail. The Devil was so furious that he threw himself into the water and that was how the black chasm came about, the “gurgito nigro” which is thirty metres deep below the bridge. This is the origin of the original name of St- Jean- de- Fos, Sancti-Johannis-de-Gurgito-Nigro.
