Villages in the wine growing plain
Campagnan
At the beginning of the 12th century, the village of Campagnan was a dependency of the Abbey of Gellone, a group of dwellings that included nine manses (farms) and ten houses for farmers and artisans. The village once had its château and the château had its chapel, but now both have completely disappeared. This original historic centre was surrounded by fortifications, probably built in the 14th century; their gates can still be made out.
Campagnan developed thanks to its wine-growing activities, the village’s main source of income throughout the 19th century. The building of a railway line around 1897 helped the wine-trade to expand and brought about a real economic revolution. The little station, which can still be seen today and is very well preserved, transformed the village.
Campagnan is dotted with agricultural buildings, including many barns used to store dessert grapes.
