Villages in the wine growing plain
Saint-Bauzille-de-la-Sylve
In the Middle Ages, the village of Saint-Bauzille-de-la-Sylve came under the barony of Le Pouget, and was a possession of the counts Guilhem of Montpellier. There is a first church mentioned in 1125, but no fortress was built so as not to compete with the one in Le Pouget, the principal seat of authority of the House of Montpellier in the hinterland.
This village was therefore devoid of any defensive or military role and its defences were only built at a very late stage.
From the 18th century, the expansion of the village followed that of wine-growing, with houses being built along the boulevard that surrounds the historic centre.
The part of the village which stands on the plain reflects the economic expansion linked with viticulture from the 19th century onwards in that it is dotted with masets, temporary dwellings, modest in design, only occupied during periods of work on the fields, at ploughing or harvest time.
You can also find many more of them, as well as developments linked to water power (canals, rills, washhouses and fountains) around the village if you take a stroll in the plain where the vines are grown.
