Villages in the wine growing plain
Saint-Guiraud
The layout of the village of St-Guiraud shows two complementary elements, which together make up an unusual town plan. The church and the château stand on the top of a small hill. Lower down, a single-street village built in the 15th century is aligned north-south.
The church, in the upper part of the village, dates from the 15th century. The château, as it appears nowadays, shows that the entire site was rebuilt in the 17th century and has no vestiges of any earlier period.
The chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Vierge-Noire was built in the 17th century ad has become an important place for processions, alongside Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Gignac and Notre-Dame-de-la-Garrigue in Lagamas.
Inside the chapel dedicated to Saint-Géraud of Aurillac, in the upper village, Saint-Guiraud houses an architectural treasure: a tabernacle of outstanding quality, dating from the mid-17th century, restored in 1978.
It is made of gilded wood and houses the sacrament. It is a superb receptacle, conceived in the purest Baroque style, a real wonder of church furnishing.
