The Languedoc wine-growing region
The oldest wine-growing region in France. The Hérault wine-growing area is part of the wider Languedoc, the oldest wine-growing region in France. Introduced by the Greeks or the Etruscans five centuries before the birth of Christ, vine cultivation was further developed by the Romans and amphora of wine were exported throughout the Mediterranean basin.
Avidly pursued by successive waves of invaders, including the Visigoths, Moors and Franks, our wine-growing heritage was preserved and developed by religious communities, in particular the abbeys of Aniane and Gellone (Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert).
Wines and spirits were transported along the Canal du Midi to Holland and other countries, and the wines of the Languedoc became known throughout the world.
Today, these age-old skills and expertise, combined with the creativity of the cellar masters, the latest wine-making technologies and improvements in the selection of grape varieties, produce wines of ever-increasing quality at a reasonable price. The Languedoc-Roussillon region is classified in the sommeliers' guide as "the most exciting wine-producing region in Europe" and as offering "the best quality-price-pleasure ratio in Europe".
